Answers to Common Questions About TMS Care

TMS FAQs in Colorado Springs

About The Mind Grove TMS Center

What kind of practice are you?

We are a physician-led, TMS-focused psychiatric practice in Colorado Springs, founded by Megan Bowers, MD, PhD. Our clinical focus includes standard rTMS, iTBS, and Accelerated TMS within an integrative psychiatric care model.

We evaluate each patient individually, considering diagnosis, treatment history, safety factors, current symptoms, and the role TMS may play in the broader treatment plan.

Dr. Megan Bowers, MD, PhD, leads evaluations at The Mind Grove TMS Center. She is dual ABPN board-certified in Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
During your evaluation, Dr. Bowers reviews your diagnosis, treatment history, current symptoms, medications, safety considerations, and treatment goals before recommending a treatment plan.

Yes. Medication may remain part of care when it supports your treatment plan.

When clinically appropriate, we may use medication and brief adjunctive supports to help support response to TMS. If you already have a prescribing clinician, Dr. Bowers will collaborate on psychotropic medication changes rather than taking over that care. If you do not have a prescriber, you can receive that support directly through Dr. Bowers during TMS treatment.

We share a suite with independent therapy providers. Therapy may remain an important part of a broader treatment plan, and we consider your current care, treatment relationships, and clinical needs when making recommendations.

Understanding TMS

What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses delivered through a coil positioned near the scalp. During treatment, you remain awake and seated. TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation.

At The Mind Grove, care may include standard rTMS, iTBS, Accelerated TMS, augmentation with medications, or addition of other interventions to augment the TMS treatment.

You sit in a treatment chair while a magnetic coil is positioned near your scalp. The coil delivers magnetic pulses according to your treatment plan while you remain awake.

Because TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, patients can generally drive themselves after treatment.

Some patients notice a tapping sensation during treatment. Before treatment begins, we review what to expect and consider comfort and tolerability throughout the treatment process.

We consider your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment history, current medications, safety profile, and broader care plan. TMS is not appropriate for every patient or every condition, so we make treatment recommendations after a clinical evaluation.

Treatment Options

What is the difference between rTMS, iTBS, and Accelerated TMS?

rTMS, or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, is the broader treatment category. Standard rTMS uses repeated magnetic pulses delivered in a structured course of treatment.

iTBS is a form of rTMS that uses rapid theta-burst stimulation patterns. Each iTBS appointment is approximately 20 minutes, with about 3-10 minutes of stimulation.

Accelerated TMS uses iTBS as its delivery method and is defined by multiple treatment sessions per day rather than once-daily treatment. Accelerated protocols vary, and we determine whether a more condensed schedule is appropriate based on each patient’s clinical needs and treatment plan.

The treatment timeline depends on the approach we recommend for you. Standard rTMS and iTBS are delivered daily for 4-6 weeks, followed by a taper phase for a total of 36-40 treatments. Accelerated TMS offers 36-40 treatments over a more condensed treatment schedule when that approach fits your clinical needs and treatment plan.

Yes, adolescents ages 15 and older are eligible for TMS treatment as an adjunct for MDD.  Additional diagnoses, such as anxiety and trauma-related conditions will be considered on an off-label and case-by-case basis.

Dr. Bowers considers age, diagnosis, treatment history, safety factors, current symptoms, and the broader treatment plan before determining whether TMS may be appropriate.

Conditions and Insurance

What conditions do you evaluate?

We evaluate adults and adolescents ages 15 and older for depression-related conditions, including major depressive disorder, treatment-resistant depression, and MDD with co-occurring anxiety symptoms.

For adults with generalized anxiety disorder or PTSD, TMS may also be considered after clinical evaluation. Our recommendations are based on diagnosis, treatment history, symptoms, safety considerations, and the current care plan.

No. Generalized anxiety disorder is distinct from major depressive disorder with co-occurring anxiety symptoms, sometimes called anxious depression.

These conditions can involve overlapping symptoms, but we evaluate them differently and may consider different treatment approaches.

Insurance coverage depends on your diagnosis, treatment approach, payer requirements, and medical-necessity criteria. We accept insurance for qualifying indications.
Coverage for TMS is not guaranteed, but we can discuss the treatment approach that may be appropriate for your situation during evaluation.

Colorado Medicaid does not cover TMS.

Starting Care

What happens before treatment begins?

Treatment begins with a physician evaluation. Dr. Bowers reviews your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment history, current medications, safety considerations, and treatment goals before recommending a plan.

If TMS is appropriate, we will explain the recommended approach and what to expect during treatment.

Contact us to discuss your symptoms, treatment history, and whether rTMS, iTBS, Accelerated TMS, medication management, or a combination of care may be clinically appropriate.
